Kali Linux gets its name from Kali, the Hindu goddess of time and change — a powerful symbol of transformation and destruction of evil. The name reflects the distro’s purpose: to expose vulnerabilities and strengthen systems through ethical hacking2.
It evolved from a previous security-focused distro called BackTrack, and was rebuilt from the ground up by Offensive Security in 2013. The name “Kali” was chosen to represent the fluid, ever-changing nature of cybersecurity tools and the fierce power of the OS itself
